2010 federal income tax filing deadline, is just around the corner. For Texans trying to wade through their federal income tax return, it can often be challenging. Fortunately, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) stand ready to assist taxpayers with information on preparations services.

A new service offered this year is Free File, a free, federal income tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers. Taxpayers with a 2010 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less who meet additional requirements can qualify for Free File. For more information on the program visit IRS.gov.

TWC also is encouraging qualifying taxpayers to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which allows lower-income individuals and families to pay less or no federal income tax, or receive cash payments. Local Workforce Solutions Offices offer tax preparation help, including how to file for EITC. For more information on specific services provided by Local Workforce Boards in your area, please visit www.texasworkforce.org.

The IRS estimates that in 2009 more than 2.6 million Texans claimed more than $6.5 billion in EITC credits, with an average refund of $2,492. In recent years, Texas has ranked first in the nation in the number of EITC dollars claimed by taxpayers. Despite the credit’s availability, however, the IRS estimates that as many as 20 to 25 percent of Americans who qualify for the credit do not claim it on their tax returns.

Under certain limitations for 2010, individuals may qualify if their adjusted gross income is less than:

•	$43,352 ($48,362 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
•	$40,363 ($45,373 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
•	$35,535 ($40,545 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
•	$13,460 ($18,470 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children
The maximum credit for 2010 is as follows:
•	$5,666 with three or more qualifying children
•	$5,036 with two qualifying children
•	$3,050 with one qualifying child
•	$457 with no qualifying children

Investment income must be less than $3,100 for the year to qualify for EITC.

EITC does not affect an individual’s eligibility to receive certain public assistance benefits. In most cases, the credit payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, low-income housing or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments.

Filing your federal income tax return can be intimidating. None other than Albert Einstein has called the income tax “the hardest thing in the world to understand.” But there are a variety of tools to help you complete your forms properly and completely.

Here’s five ways you may be able to get help with your return for free in 2010:

1. The Free File program through the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS offers free online tax preparation for eligible taxpayers through its partnership with Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private tax software companies. If your adjusted gross income for 2009 was $57,000 or less, you may be able to use this step-by-step tax software for free. This software asks simple questions that you answer, does the math for you and double checks for accuracy. Some of the participating tax software companies will also offer state tax preparation, but some fees may apply. Check it out here.

2. IRS assistance centers. The IRS provides free tax help for people who earn low to moderate income ($49,000 or less). The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program has centers located in neighborhood centers across the country. You can find your closest location by calling 1-800-829-1040. There will also be help centers across the country on Feb. 6 and Feb. 20 to help taxpayers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is a tax credit for people who work but do not earn high incomes. You can find a list of these EITC centers on the IRS Web site here.

3. Free File fillable forms. The IRS provides online fillable forms here that anyone can use. These don’t provide the step-by-step help of tax software, but there’s no income limitation either. For those who earned more than $57,000 in gross income last year, these online fillable forms might be a good option.

4. Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program. This program helps out those who are at least 60 years old. During tax filing season from late January through April 15, AARP offers Tax-Aide counseling at more than 7,000 locations across the country. You can find the nearest location at the AARP Web site here.

5. Help for military personnel and their families. The Armed Forces Tax Council helps out military members and their families with tax preparation and military specific tax issues.

According to the IRS, about 80 percent of taxpayers use a paid preparer or tax preparation software. But there are ways to complete your return without shelling out a bundle of money.

Suggestions for people who have never filed online, never done their own taxes, or are first time tax filers:

Repeat the following phrase before starting – “This is not rocket science. If I can pass grade 8, I can do my own taxes.”

Get all your paperwork in order before starting. When you get tax documents in the mail, start a file and put everything into that file. Once you have all your paperwork, start your tax filing.

E-filing is the simplest way to submit your taxes. TurboTax includes a free e-file with their product. I always wondered what would happen if your tax return got lost in the mail.

You can often download/import information from your financial software or from your financial institutions. Don’t worry. If the idea of entering all your stock purchases sounds overwhelming, you can usually just import all that information.

When completing your taxes with TurboTax, go through each stage step by step. Don’t try and guess what is and is not appropriate. Just follow the questions and be sure you don’t miss anything.

If you’re not feeling confident to actually file your own taxes, then once someone completes it, you can compare your results with theirs.

Lifetime Learning Credit is calculated as 20% (in the vast majority of cases) of your tuition paid.

So, if your tuition paid was more then $10,000 – then you will be better off claiming Lifetime Learning Credit (form 8863) if it is less then $10,000 then it Education Credit should be your choice (form 8917)

However, unlike the Hope Scholarship Credit, the Lifetime Learning Credit is calculated on a per family, rather than a per student, basis. Therefore, the maximum available credit does not vary with the number of students in the family. For example, if in 1999 a married individual whose modified adjusted gross income is $35,000 pays $5,000 of qualified tuition and related expenses to attend an eligible educational institution, the individual may claim a $1,000 Lifetime Learning Credit. If in the same year the individual also pays another $2,000 in qualified tuition and related expenses for his spouse to attend an eligible educational institution, the individual’s Lifetime Learning Credit is still $1,000.

To calculate my basic return, I used TurboTax Online’s free version. It’s bare-bones and doesn’t feature all the extras you’ll find in more capable versions of the software, but it got the job done. Because TurboTax Online is more powerful than competing products, it takes more time to prepare your taxes. In fact, it took me over an hour to file my basic return with W-2 wage income, interest, and basic deductions. After all that work, it returned the same refund as the other tax preparation tools.

Overall, TurboTax has the best product on the market.

As the Christmas holidays passed, the new year 2010 started on a usual busy note as the tax season rolls on. While conscious American taxpayers receive their W-2s and 1099s, logically, many encounter difficulties in preparing their own taxes. This is especially true about those who are to fill tax declarations for the first time. Oftentimes, however, even experienced taxpayers stumble across the intricacies of tax filings, which arise with new factors such as new home purchases, birth of a child, rental income and others. Naturally, questions arise, and people want answers to them in the manner, which is both, professional and easily understood.

Today, many seek answers to their tax questions online, which is a natural occurrence in the era of internet. Keywords and -phrases searched commonly include: “electronic filing,” “tax return,” “efile,” “taxes,” “tax filing,” “tax preparation,” “tax refund,” “tax information,” “income taxes,” and “tax help.”

According to WebTrends, visibility of tax-related searches on the main engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask increase more than 30% during the tax season. Tax forum websites, where individuals exchange their knowledge and experience in tax preparations and savings become especially popular. Here, nearly any tax related question could become resolved by a collective knowledge power of thousands individuals, and, which is important, absolutely free of charge. One of such websites is www.taxforum.us, which brings together tax professionals and common taxpayers in a community that seeks answers to tough questions in tax season. Knowledge of tax professionals combined with personal experience of thousands members of the website guarantee that one will find answers to nearly any tax related issue, corporate or individual. One especially attractive feature of the forum is the visibility of unanswered questions posted on the main page, which encourages participation and resolution seeking among its members. No registration is required, friendly user interface and question search feature make the site easy to navigate, and 7,500-8,000 daily visitors serve as a good credibility mark to the information one can find there.

Everyone knows that procrastination is a thief of time and money, and this is especially true in tax season. Start today, and look for the answers to your tough tax related questions online, where millions like you share the same goal of a timely and confident tax filing. Taxes should not be a brainer, especially, when one relies on collective knowledge and experience found in online forums.
